About
My work exists in an intermediate space, seeking to unbiasedly explore the divide between our societal and our natural selves. The figures are often stoically frozen in place but brimming with the emotionality that nature has gifted us with, creating tension. They are either placed in tandem with samples from nature or stark nature-less backgrounds to explore deeper both settings we find ourselves in, but don’t conscientiously examine. Specific body parts are often highlighted to evoke curiosity about our physical selves and it’s purpose within its space, natural or man made.
My work involves a studio practice of oil figurative work alongside explorative plein air painting and sculpture. The two exercises inform each other as I search to find the harmony and tension between the societal and natural world.
When painting from a figure, it is important that I communicate with the model about their experiences with nature and if they feel divides in their own life. While painting and sculpting plein air, I focus on traditional methods by respecting nature and exploring the land, often existing in remote locations for several days before making them the subject of my paintings.
